We’ll Find You When the Sun Turns Black

In tandem with TIFF 2020, Anouk De Clercq presented her solo exhibition, We'll find you when the sun turns black. Three video works made up the exhibition: Helga Humming (2019), a collaboration with Helga Davis and Vessel, which premiered at BOZAR, Brussels, Belgium, in 2019. Followed by the newly created We'll find you when the sun goes black (2020) inspired by the artist's research trip to Tromsø city in early 2019 and One (2020).

We'll find you when the sun goes black is inspired by the ‘Terrella', used by Norwegian scientist and explorer Kristian Birkeland while investigating the aurora, and by a Bertolt Brecht poem, written in exile in the 1930s:

“In the dark times

Will there also be singing?

Yes, there will also be singing

About the dark times.”

For the film, One Anouk De Clercq, Helga Davis and Vessel continue their collaboration on a new project, with the idea of 'radical empathy' as a starting point. One is a film, a performance, a 21st-century protest song. A call to action, a pledge, a commitment, a solemn undertaking. A summoning of consciousness, an instruction, a stand against mindlessness and distraction. An art of limits, a will to the power of others. An active silence, a difficult love, an admission of failure, of lack. It is labour and an invitation. To drink in the vibrancy of life at all scales. To embrace complexity and attend to our world with befitting vibrancy of feeling.

Anouk De Clercq explores the potential of audiovisual language to create possible worlds. She is interested in what lies behind ‘reality’ or in between the visible and the imaginary.

She has received several awards, including the Illy Prize at Art Brussels in 2005 and a Prix Ars Electronica Honorary Mention in 2014. Her work presented in institutions such as Tate Modern, Centre Pompidou, Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, MAXXI, Centre d’ArtContemporain Genève, International Film Festival Rotterdam, Berlinale, Ars Electronica, among others.

Anouk De Clercq is an artistic researcher at the School of Arts University College Ghent. She is a founding member of Auguste Orts. Gallery Sofie Van de Velde represents Anouk De Clercq.
