Temporary Arrival

Tromsø Academy of Art Degree Show 2023

What is it about?

Tromsø Kunstforening and the Tromsø Academy of Arts (Romssa Dáiddaakademiija), UIT — The Arctic University of Norway, are proud to present "Temporary Arrival" – an exhibition that marks the completion of artistic education at the Bachelor’s and Master’s programme of 2023.

With works by:

BA:
Loulou Buxbom
Synnøve Fatland
Sebastian Lavin
Solfrid Elise Lindblom
Malin Tara Sakstad

MA:
Niels Nielsen

The graduate exhibition takes over the former Mack Øst brewery - a site once filled with fermenting, fabrication and bottling. Now containing the work of six different artists, the building once more becomes a space for bubbling ideas, taking form as new art projects.

Following 3 years (BA) and 2 years (MA), the artists present ambitious works, indicative of the art practices they have developed over their formal education at Tromsø Academy of Arts. Starting their education during the pandemic - a time of reinforced walls and borders - all of the works loosely consider the boundaries of the world we live in, both social, material and political. What does it mean for an artist's education when they arrive in a city or a space of education which is closed to them? What does it mean, while graduating, that those spaces become closed to others - namely those from outside of the EU?

Temporary Arrival is accompanied by Tickets to Nowhere, the graduation publication of 2023 where the exhibiting artists present their projects alongside collective and individual reflections anchored in their time at the academy.

The exhibition is accompanied by a series of events organised and led by the graduating students, including tours of the exhibition led by the artists, a presentation and screening of ‘WALK THE WAY’ in Mack Øst, in addition to an opening afterparty in Cafe Eka, TKF, Musegata 2.

The collaboration between Tromsø Kunstforening and Tromsø Academy of Arts, is a longstanding one of great value to both institutions. It becomes increasingly clear of the importance for solidarity and support within the arts field, both locally and across the world. The change in Norwegian law - introducing student fees for any students from outwith the EU - is one which will have massive and dire effects across all of Norwegian society, but will be particularly felt in the arts and in Tromsø.Both the Academy of Arts and the Tromsø art benefit greatly from having a broad spectrum of people, voices and perspectives in it; academically, socially, artistically and productively. The art scene in Tromsø has been made great by the mix of local and foreign artists working together - we will all be weaker without this. We stand against this change, and with the campaign in KHIO for Free Education For All.
