Bookbinding Workshop: Experimental Materials
with Hans Ragnar Mathisen and Mondo books
What?
Mondo books organizes a bookbinding workshop led by Hans Ragnar Mathisen from September 18th - 20th
The workshop will guide participants through the steps of making their own handbound sketchbook. The focus will be on the use of experimental materials for the book cover. This could be local, traditional materials such as reindeer leather and fish skins, or other improvised materials such as cloth or linens. We do not have the capacity at this time to prepare the materials (skins for example), so please bring them ready to work with. We will provide materials needed, however, participants are strongly encouraged to bring their own materials that they would like to experiment with. The workshop is open to everyone, both for beginner and intermediate binders. The workshop fees include materials, tuition, use of hand tools, and when necessary, use of workshop equipment.

About our bookbinding instructor:
Hans Ragnar Mathisen is a Sami painter, graphic artist and author. He is also one of the founding members of the Sami Artist Group of 1974. Mathisen is internationally known for his Sami maps: decolonizing methodologies and toponymy (study of place names) are a primary aspect of his graphical practice. Lesser known is his bookpractice, which includes beautifully constructed hand-bound sketchbooks, journals, and the recovering of historical books. Mathisen currently lives and works in Tromsdalen, Norway.

Mondo is currently run by Tanya Busse, Marion Bouvier and Nicolas Siepen
