For more than a year now, the Israeli authorities - with diplomatic and material support from their Western allies - have been systematically destroying and ethnically cleansing the Gaza Strip. At least 44,000 people - most likely many more - have been killed in Gaza so far. The genocide in Gaza has been made possible by the unwillingness of the West - and the US in particular - to hold Israel accountable for its systematic violations of international law and human rights. This has also enabled Israel to escalate its attacks and annexation of Palestinian territory in the West Bank, as well as its terror bombing and invasion of Lebanon. Israeli authorities have consistently ignored orders from the International Court of Justice and the UN General Assembly, and the message from leading Israeli politicians is clear: They will not stop until all of Palestine - from the Mediterranean to the Jordan River - is conquered and annexed, and the Palestinian population reduced to a minimum. The decision in the Knesset - Israel's National Assembly - that the country will never recognize a Palestinian state, earlier this autumn, leaves little room for alternative interpretations.
In light of this situation, inaction is a luxury that we in Norway should not allow ourselves. However small our actions may appear in the face of international politics, it is imperative that we do not give up, but continue to show that we neither accept Israel's genocide, nor our own authorities' apathy towards Israel's crimes - an apathy that ultimately must be considered complicity. As art and cultural institutions in Tromsø - Gaza's twin city - we have a responsibility to do what we can to show solidarity and support to the Palestinian people. We hereby encourage artists and craftspeople to donate works and share this invitation in their networks.
